Atlanta is the largest city in Georgia as well as being the state capital. The city has a population of over 400,000 but the booming metropolis area surrounding it actually holds more than 4 million residents. The Georgia Metropolitan region is actually the ninth largest in the country, although the city is only the 41st largest city. Originally inhabited by Indians, the region only became a white settlement in the mid 19th century and remained wooded for some time following this. The Civil War destroyed large areas of Atlanta but once it was rebuilt it soon became one of the 50 largest cities in the country and has remained that way for 110 years.
