The name Jamaica, when related to the area of Queens is actually unrelated to the country. Jamaica, Queens is a town first founded in 1656 by the English. It has a large number of West Indian immigrants, and is one of the areas in Queens that is predominantly black. Jamaica is the county seat of Queens and because of this there are a large number of courthouses and other similar buildings.
