Originally, Laredo was founded as a town in the year of 1755 and has changed hands between Mexico and America on several occasions. Laredo became a city in 1852 and is one of the oldest crossings between America and Mexico in existence. The median age of the city is only 27 years old and there are currently 200,000 residents and 50,000 households within the city boundaries. Over one third of the population are aged under 18 making the per capita income equivalent to only $11,000 per annum. Only 8% of the population are aged 65 or over, however.
